Last night my husband and I were watching a new legal drama on TV, and I got so irritated I was actually yelling at the screen. There was a subplot about a 62-year-old man who wanted to change his age to 42, because he “identified” as younger than his actual age. He actually hired lawyers (two of his former students) to file a case citing age discrimination. The basis of the discrimination? He claimed his age prevented him from attracting the right women (read: 20-somethings) on the dating websites he frequented.

Sounds ridiculous, right? Basically an aging womanizer is frustrated 25-year-old women aren’t interested him, so he decides to have the court declare him two decades younger. This could never happen. I mean, facts are facts. Chronological age is a mathematical equation. Current year – birth year = years of age. The answer is not subjective. It is as concrete as day and night, hot and cold, male and female.

Ahh… and there you have it. Male and female. Used to be a no-brainer, right? You were either a male or a female. It is a biological fact, not a personal decision. When you filled out a doctor’s form or applied for a driver’s license, you didn’t have to spend a few minutes deciding how you “felt” that day. Did you feel like a man or a woman? Nope, it was a given, as clear as the font on your birth certificate. You were either male or female.

But over the past few years, as our culture has systematically removed God from our government, our schools and sadly even some of our churches, we have eroded the foundation upon which everything rests: truth. Because if there is no God, then there is no truth, because truth becomes subjective. It becomes what the left decides it is, what one person “feels” at that moment, what a liberal, anti-Christian TV show decides to call it, and so on.

I first noticed this several years ago, when I began to hear the expression “my truth.” People like Oprah Winfrey began promoting “seeking your authentic self” or “living your truth.” Nothing about honoring the Lord Jesus Christ by living by his truth. No, of course not. That could not be allowed, because that would suggest truth was finite, when the ungodly world insists it is actually relative. Whenever I heard someone refer to his truth, I would mentally insert his “perspective.”

Surely people don’t actually believe this, I thought. Because if they do, they are saying that there are no such things as facts, data or reality. It is all based on someone’s interpretation. If there are no facts, then there can be no rules. No codes of conduct. No laws. Why? Because all those things hinge upon truth, and what the world is telling us is that there is no truth.

Given this, is it no wonder a person’s sex has become an identity issue instead of a biological fact. It is also not surprising a TV show would feature a character trying to legally alter his chronological age. Even though the judge ruled against him, she preached the merits of gender identity and the need for compassion and further exploration of this issue. The show’s writers didn’t even try to hide their agenda: a world in which what feels good replaces what is true and what is right.

Frank Turek, one of my favorite Christian apologists, said it best: “So when someone says there is no truth, if you apply the claim to itself, what should you say? Is that true?”

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
